Changes to the 2009 edition includes:
  • Needle Safety – O. Reg. 474/07. This new regulation, which came into force September 1, 2008, specifies criteria for the provision and use of safety-engineered needles in hospitals.
  • O. Reg. 317/08. This regulation amends O. Reg. 474/07, expanding the mandatory use of safety-engineered needles to long-term care homes, laboratories, specimen collection centres and psychiatric facilities.
  • Exposure Limits. Amendments were made by O. Reg. 248/08 to exposure limits for over 30 biological and chemical agents listed in the schedules of Regulation 833.
  • Increased powers for Ontario Ministry of Labour Inspectors. Under Ontario's Regulatory Modernization Act 2006, MOL inspectors conducting safety inspections can now document and report observed violations to the Employment Standards Act, the Smoke Free Ontario Act or any of 78 other Acts listed in the RMA 2006.

The legislation cited in the 2009 edition is current to January 3, 2009.

Please note that the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act does not cover employees of the federal government, banks, communication companies or transportation companies. Those employees are covered by Part II of the Canada Labour Code.
